Since 2017, the Access Accelerated-World Bank partnership has supported LMICs in addressing the rising burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). With development assistance for NCDs accounting for less than 2% of global health funding, combined with stagnating or declining domestic investment in NCDs, the collaboration aims to bridge these gaps.
A special feature in the recent Access Accelerated 2024 Highlights Report reflects on this multi-year partnership between Access Accelerated and the World Bank, the key outcomes, lessons learned, and the road ahead.
Key achievements
In the period between 2017 and 2023, Access Accelerated contributed over US$25 million to a Trust Fund, supporting 44 World Bank activities across global, regional, and national levels. Key initiatives included publication of key reports and tools to guide NCD investment and policy, technical assistance to develop strategies and investment cases, and pilot programs integrating NCD services.
Notable outcomes included:
- Strengthened institutional capacity in select LMICs to advocate for increased NCD funding and implement effective care models.
- Enhanced knowledge-sharing at national, regional, and global levels, fostering the adoption of best practices.
- Improved coverage and quality of NCD services through the rollout of integrated models of care.
Lessons and future directions
The partnership highlighted the importance of trust, knowledge-sharing, and innovative collaboration to maximize impact. Together, the World Bank and Access Accelerated remain committed to driving sustainable progress in global NCD response efforts. Building on these learnings, the newly launched Financing Accelerator Network for NCDs (FAN) will help close the NCD financing gap through regional expertise, coalition-building, and catalytic seed funding.
