The past year marked significant progress in addressing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), with key initiatives launched to bridge the financing gap, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). As global efforts intensify, 2025 is set to be a pivotal year in accelerating the response to NCDs.

A major milestone of 2024 was the launch of the Financing Accelerator Network for NCDs (FAN), an ambitious initiative developed through a technical partnership between Access Accelerated and the World Bank. This initiative, supported by Results for Development (R4D) as Network Manager and the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) as the host of the first NCD Financing Accelerator for Sub-Saharan Africa, aims to enhance financial mechanisms for NCD care in regions where the need is most pressing.

The longstanding partnership between Access Accelerated and the World Bank continued to yield tangible results. Key 0utcomes include:

  • Strengthened institutional capacity in select LMICs to advocate for greater funding, tackle the rising NCD burden, assess and address gaps in the care cascade, and explore public-private partnerships
  • Enhanced knowledge at country, regional, and global levels, and sharing of good practices
  • Improved coverage and quality of NCD services resulting from the design and rollout of integrated models of care

A newly released 2024 highlights report provides deeper insights into these and other initiatives and their impact, underscoring the collective progress made in ensuring access to quality NCD care worldwide.

The continued support from Access Accelerated members—including Bristol Myers Squibb, Chugai, Daiichi Sankyo, Lilly, Menarini, Novo Nordisk, Ono Pharmaceuticals, Takeda, and UCB—has been instrumental in driving these advancements. Collaborative efforts remain crucial as stakeholders prepare for a critical year ahead in the global response to NCDs.
